GUWAHATI: Journalist-turned-politician and Rajya Sabha MP Ajit Kumar Bhuyan today slammed the BJP and claimed that it will fall well short of its target of winning 100 Seats in the ensuing Lok Sabha polls. He said that 'Grand Alliance' will perform "beyond expectations."

"At the moment, I can say the Grand alliance consisting the Congress and its allies will be able to secure 88 Seats in the ensuing polls in the State. The BJP will not be able to win 35 additional Seats as a part of its agenda," stated Bhuyan, whose party, Anchalik Gana Morcha (AGM), is also a part of the alliance.

Taking a dig at fellow regional party Asom Gana Parishad (AGP), Bhuyan said, "The AGP, by aligning itself with the BJP party, has completely surrendered itself."

It needs mention here that Bhuyan was one of the most vocal opponents of the Citizenship (Amendment) Act, and took part in a large number of protests against the same. During the same time, the AGP came under a lot of pressure for staying 'mum' on the issue.

Although the party withdrew its support to the BJP party amid protests, it again joined the coalition ahead of the General elections in Assam. A section of people of Assam has questioned the "regional" character of the AGP for its unflinching support for the BJP, which symbolically stands for the 'Hindutva' philosophy of mainland India.

Atul Bora, the leader of the AGP, had earlier earned the wrath of the new regional parties by comparing them to "Bollywood item numbers."

Assembly polls in Assam are due in April-May and tenure of the present 126-member House expires on May 31.
