GUWAHATI: Assam Congress MP from Kaliabor Gaurav Gogoi today said the Congress alliance will at least one seat more than the BJP in the Assam Assembly elections and reiterated the party’s call to the remaining regional parties to join the alliance.

“If BJP wins 100 seat, we will also win 101 seats. We will definitely win at least one seat more than the BJP,” said Gogoi.

Party senior leader and leader of the opposition in the Assam Assembly Debabrata Saikia said the Congress and its allies need to win 64 seats in the 126-member house to form the government and he was confident they would do it.

Reacting to the claim, senior cabinet minister and North East Democratic Alliance convenor Himanta Biswa Sarma said in Chirang: “They’ll will that many seats only in Bangladesh.”

Reiterating his appeal to the Raijor Dal and Assam Jatiya Parishad (AJP) to join the Congress’ crusade against the BJP misrule in the state, Gogoi said: “Unlike the BJP, when we three Gogois – Lurinjyoti Gogoi, Akhil Gogoi and Gaurav Gogoi -- stand together or take out a cycle rally together, people will have the confidence in us that these people are standing up for Assam and not petty political gains.”

“Our door will remain open for all the parties opposed to the BJP and its allies to join our alliance. It is a fact that isolated fights cannot help any party overthrow the BJP and its allies in Assam. I am hopeful the JP and Raijor Dal will give a second though and reconsider their decision over joining our combined fight against the BJP,” Gogoi told InsideNE on the sidelines of the Congress’ Naba Yatra programme at Rajiv Bhavan here.

The Congress state unit today appointed Jury Sharma Bordoloi as the president of Guwahati district unit of the party and launched a fresh campaign to regain the four constituencies of the state capital city. The four constituencies are Dispur, represented by Atul Bora of BJP, Jalukbari, represented by Himanta Biswa Sarma of BJP, East Guwahati, represented by Sidhartha Bhattacharya of BJP and West Guwahati, represented by Romendra Narayan Kalita of the Asom Gana Parishad.
