GUWAHATI: The Congress today accused Assam cabinet Himanta Biswa Sarma of “insulting” the small time traders and shopkeepers while criticising the Congress’s five guarantees campaign programme.

“State finance minister Himanta Biswa Sarma is insulting the small time traders across the state. But, he can’t help it. It’s the BJP’s character,” said AICC general secretary in-charge of Assam Jitendra Singh at a press conference at Rajiv Bhawan here today.

Sarma has been repeatedly taking a jibe at the Congress that the grand old party should not speak of guarantee. “Guarantee is something the shopkeepers give you when they sell you one brief free with one brief bought,” Sarma has been saying over the past few days.

Apparently being hit back, Sarma today changed the line to “Congress should no longer talk about guarantees. The people have seen their guarantees over the past 70 years.”

Singh also alleged the BJP has been serving only lies to the people of Assam in the name of development of the state over the past five years.

He also said the party was insulting the unemployed youth, exploiting the rights and budged the women by hiking price of LPG cylinders to Rs 850. “Humiliating others is the BJP’s way to feel themselves superior over others,” he said.

Speaking about the Prime minister Narendra Modi’s Assam vision, Singh said it is all about false promises, bad heart, big names and small philosophies.

He further said Assam is known for its culture, tradition and goodwill in the country, but, the saffron party has so far attacked on these through the Citizenship Amendment Act, 2019 (CAA).
