NEW DELHI: The Congress has filed an FIR against Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) national president JP Nadda, union minister Smriti Irani, party general secretary B L Santhosh, and spokesperson Sambit Patra over the "toolkit" dispute.

Rajasthan Congress secretary Jaswant Gurjar filed the FIR against the BJP leaders at Bajaj Nagar Police Station in Jaipur accusing the BJP of lying, deception, and hypocrisy in politics.

This has come days after the BJP released a "toolkit," saying it was developed by Congress to smear prime minister Narendra Modi and the government's management of the COVID-19 pandemic.

The accusation has been rejected by Congress calling BJP-promoted false narrative.

One of the first BJP leaders to tweet about the toolkit was JP Nadda. Smriti Irani, Santhosh, and Sambit Patra later took up the accusation. They shared a report that appeared to be written on the "AICC Research Department's" letterhead.

a FIR against the former Chhattisgarh chief minister Raman Singh and Sambit Patra has also been registered by the Congress' students wing, NSUI in Raipur for printing "false and fabricated" content.

The case was filed under sections 469 (forged document for the purpose of causing damage to one's reputation), 504 (purposeful insult with the intent to cause a breach of peace), and 505(1)(b) of the Indian Penal Code (circulating rumour or report with intent to cause fear or alarm).

The "toolkit" allegedly instructs Congress members to use terms like "Indian strain" and "Modi strain" on social media, as well as "keep using the word super spreader Kumbh."

It also allegedly instructs party members to use "dramatic pictures of funerals and dead bodies," stating that "PM Modi's approval ratings have remained strong amid the crisis and mismanagement."
