Ramesh was accompanied by Assam Congress leader Ripun Bora, former Silchar Lok Sabha MP Sushmita Dev, Manickam Tagore, Mukul Wasnik, and Ranajit Mukherjee.

Tweeting about the visit, Ramesh wrote, "Visited a detention centre in Silchar just now. 48 genuine Indian citizens not having 'proper' papers.17 from Bangladesh who strayed in and want to go back but are not bring accepted, and 6 from Myanmar who don't want to go back. A very depressing and sobering experience..."

Jairam Ramesh is on a visit to Assam and met the local Congress leaders. Ramesh also held a press conference yesterday in Guwahati where he said that the NRC exposed the hollowness of the BJP.

Ramesh said that the Congress party will stand against the Government’s bid to enact the Citizenship (Amendment) Bill, and alleged that BJP is tearing society apart by enacting this Bill. “The NRC has a special historical context and Assam was the only state to formulate the NRC, and later in 1985, the NRC was a major demand of the Assam Accord between the Congress party and the leaders of Assam”, he said.

"Amit Shah does not speak about the NRC in Assam anymore, but he speaks about it in other states such as Haryana, Maharastra, etc", Ramesh said, also alleging that the BJP’s claims before the NRC have been proven false, which is why the BJP has gone mum about it in Assam. “They (the BJP) are using it to divide society”, Ramesh warned.
