Congress likely to finalise Assam election list of candidates by tonight

GUWAHATI: The Congress is all set to finalise its list of candidates for the Assam assembly elections by tonight.

This was disclosed by All India Congress Committee general secretary in-charge of Assam Jitendra Singh here today, adding that the list would, however, be published only by tomorrow.

“Unlike the past, this time we are not going to Delhi to finalise the list of candidates. We are preparing the list of candidates and will take the approval here itself by this evening,” Singh told newspersons here this afternoon.

Sources said, a list of candidates have already been sent to the party high command in Delhi for approval.

“We are not going to release lists phase-wise. It will all come in one list which we might able able to publish by tonight,” he added.

He also said the party ticket screening committee was also assessing the anti-incumbency factor against some of the sitting MLAs. “Sitting MLAs cannot take be sure of tickets. The anti-incumbency factor of some of the sitting MLAs are also being assessed,” he said.

Asked about seat sharing with the Congress’s six other allies of the grand alliance, Singh said everything would be cleared this evening.

Sources said the Congress is likely to contest from over 80 seats in the 126-member house. Its ally All India United Democratic Front would be looking for 15 to 18 seats and Bodoland People’s Front for about 12 seats. The Left parties have been asking for at least 10 seats.
