GUWAHATI: Bad days of Assam Congress seem to be never ending no matter how the party top brass tries to put up a happy face. After its Tharwa legislator joins the saffron party a few weeks backs, yet another blow from the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) hits the party. This time blow came from none other than the most prestigious constituency of Titabar, the constituency of Congress stalwart and longest-serving Chief Minister of Assam late Tarun Gogoi.

The present Congress Legislator Bhaskar Jyoti Baruah is ready to don the saffron robes – sources inside the Bhartiya Janata Party said to InsideNE.

Since 2001, the Titabar constituency was won by Congress six times. Tarun Gogoi won the seat four times himself.

After Gogoi's death, in the last Assembly polls held in March, Congress gave the ticket to Bhaskar Jyoti Baruah who won the seat over 13,000 votes by defeating BJP candidate Hemanta Kalita.

On Monday, MLA Bhaskar Jyoti Baruah was seen at BJP's ongoing three-day long 'Jan Ashirwad Yatra' in honour of Union Minister and former Assam CM Sarbananda Sonowal in Jorhat.

Baruah's presence in the programme has raised eyebrows of many as in less than 100 days of Himanta Biswa Sarma led BJP Government, two Congress sitting MLAs Rupjyoti Kurmi and Sushanta Borgohain have joined the BJP.

A Congress party leader who does not want to be named said to InsideNE, "Deputy Commissioner has sent a letter to every MLA and other concerned people as part of his duty. It does not mean that Bhaskar Jyoti Baruah had to attend BJP's program publicly. He could have met Sonowal or other Ministers at Circuit House later as well."

On asked whether Baruah was approached by the BJP to join them or not, the member said, "Himanta Biswa Sarma is desperate to have Congress MLAs only. Which Congress MLA have they not approached yet?"

On asked about the same, sources in BJP have confirmed that Bhaskar Jyoti Baruah is all set to join the ruling party.

Will Congress be able to prevent the migration to maintain the legacy of Tarun Gogoi in Titabor- The answer is definitely not blowin’ in the wind.

Although speaking to the media, Baruah himself refuted the speculations of him joining the BJP.
