Congress MP Gaurav Gogoi details Assam govt's 'unsatisfactory' performance during pandemic  

GUWAHATI: Congress MP Gaurav Gogoi on Thursday highlighted some of the points depicting state government's poor performance in addressing the pandemic in Assam.

This comes after BJP Chief JP Nadda said that Congress parties are 'Political tourists' and they disappeared after losing the elections without doing anything for the welfare of the people in the state.

In a statement, Gogoi said that he prepared the points based on the media reports and information available on official government websites.

In his report, he said that the number of children infected by COVID19 (between of 0-18 years) have increased by 96.67% with 34,333 cases registered in the second wave as per the statistics released by the National Health Mission (NHM).

Talking about vaccination, the Congress MP said that he had already written to the Chief Minister last month, highlighting the vaccine wastage in the state and the need to declare targets for vaccinating the majority population of Assam.

He further said that even though the state government began the enhanced immunization drive from June 21 with a target of administering 3 lakh vaccinations per day for 10 days, the target was achieved only on two days. The rest of the days did not even achieve the 2 lakhs mark, said Gogoi.

On June 27, a total of 10,347 doses were administered which is way behind the target of 3 lakhs, added Gogoi.

Further highlighting the shortage of vaccine, the Congress MP said "The state has been witnessing a shortage of vaccine supply which has adversely affected vaccination envisioned in the immunization drive. As reported by the media, in Kamrup (Metropolitan) district, the vaccination numbers have reduced from around 25,000, recorded at the start of the drive, to about 12,000 now and in other vulnerable districts like Cachar and Dibrugarh, the corresponding figure has declined from around 15,000 to 7,000".

He further informed that Assam is in the bottom ten states, having vaccinated only 22.1% of its eligible population as of June 23.

"This is 4% lower than the national average of 26.1%", added the MP.

Comparing Assam with other states like Rajasthan, Tripura, Himachal Pradesh; Gogoi said that it was among the bottom ten states for vaccinating only 45.2% of its eligible population above 60 years.

Speaking about COVID fatality in the state, he said that Assam was among the top 10 states with highest increase in deaths on June 29 with a total of 42 deaths.

"The state also witnessed a shocking 12 deaths in 24 hours at GMCH earlier this week", he added.

Gogoi also alleged that several COVID deaths have gone unreported in the state and that it didn't count the people who were found positive posthumously. He urged that the process of declaring COVID-19 deaths should be revised and clarified.
