Tura, March 5, 2019:

Meghalaya Chief Minister Conrad K Sangma on Tuesday laid the foundation stone for the feeder mains of West Garo Hills district headquarter Tura town, which is expected to solve the problem of drinking water shortage in the area to a large extent. The project is estimated to be worth Rs 35 crores.

Speaking during the foundation laying ceremony at Tura town, Chief Minister Sangma urged the concerned authorities to complete the project as soon as possible. “The implementation of this (project) must be done in a timebound manner and that is the biggest challenge. This is only 10% of the work, the real work starts now. I want to request the PHE department and especially the Chief Engineer to kindly monitor this project on a weekly or fortnightly basis”, he said.

The project is funded by the Ministry of Development of North Eastern Region (MDoNER) under the North East Special Infrastructure Development Scheme (NESIDS).

It is to be mentioned that along with power, drinking water shortage has been a major problem in the second most-important town in Meghalaya. With this project, it is estimated that the Government of Meghalaya will be able to provide 23.42 million litres of drinking water, which will be sufficient for 1.8 lakh people. The project is expected to be completed within the next one and half years.
