SHILLONG: Meghalaya Chief Minister Conrad K. Sangma on Friday has said that government is willing to hold talks with outlawed Hynniewtrep National Liberation Council (HNLC), if they submit a letter ‘free from any condition’.

Sangma said that the HNLC has to shun violence and should be willing to come forward and hold talks within the constitutional framework of the country. He said that government has communicated verbally through different channels to HNLC for holding peace talks.

The conditions referred to in the letter of the HNLC were related to the Standstill agreement and the Instrument of Accession, which is not acceptable to the government.

“So these two conditions should not be there and this has been communicated to them and after the communication we were told they would submit a letter without those conditions and remove all those conditions and move in the line we have prescribed that it should be within the constitutional framework and without any conditions besides shunning of violence,” the chief minister added.

The state of Meghalaya has seen violence of the death of a former HNLC leader since August 13. The outfit also has taken responsibility of an IED blast in a local market of Shillong.
