SHILLONG: Meghalaya chief minister Conrad K Sangma, walked the Dandi route from Kareli to Gajera with 80 other padyatris (foot marchers) in Gujarat's Vadodara district on Sunday. He walked for about 18 km.

The walk is important, according to chief minister Sangma, because it commemorates the 75th anniversary of India's Independence, as well as Mahatma Gandhi's 91-year-old rebellion against British rule.

Along with Gujarat minister of state Vibhavari Dave, he paid tribute to Gandhiji in Kareli.

“Paid tribute to Gandhi Ji at #Kareli, Gujarat with Hon'ble MoS, Smti. @vibhavaridave Ji before we embark on the historic route of the #DandiMarch taken by Gandhi Ji. Today, we will partake part of the March from Kareli to Gajera for 18 kms. #AzadiKaAmritMahotsav,” Sangma tweeted.

Sangma said, “It gives me a profound sense of gratitude for all the leaders who have made sacrifices for our country.”

He also thanked Prime Minister Narendra Modi for inspiring the Dandi March.

“Tread the path of Gandhi Ji in the #DandiYatra from Kareli to Gajera, #Gujarat. To experience it is a deep feeling of gratitude for all the leaders who sacrificed for our country. Thank PM @narendramodi Ji for inspiring us to take this on,” Sangma tweeted.

“The Prime Minister has paid due attention to the Northeast, which had been neglected for years. Northeast, on the other hand, is making progress under the PM's leadership. He has travelled to the Northeast more than 15 times and has directed that all Union ministers visit the region on a regular basis. PM has devised a unique development strategy for the Northeast. On behalf of the people of Northeast, I thank him,” Sangma added.

Modi flagged off the Dandi March from Sabarmati Ashram on the first day of the Azadi Ka Amrit Mahotsav on March 12. It will be over on April 5.
