Agartala, March 16, 2020:

Students appearing for board examinations in Tripura have raised the demand for facilitating screening at all the venues as a precautionary measure amid the novel coronavirus outbreak in the country.

With the novel coronavirus declared as a worldwide emergency, the Tripura students feel the requirement of adequate preventive measures. They feel that authorities should take care as large number of students gather at every exam venue. They have also raised the need for at least one screening centre at every exam venue.

As the board exam season has been severely marred by the spread of the virus, teenagers appearing for the most important exams of their life are being subjected to undergo a traumatic situation.

Speaking to Inside Northeast, one of the 12th standard students appearing for the boards said that the coronavirus was playing a spoilsport, barring him from concentrating in studies. “This is the most important time for building our careers and as far as exams are concerned, 12th boards have been always considered to be the decisive exams for our career. But this year, the spread of coronavirus, its repercussions and preventive measures coming from different coteries and the administration have shaken me and my friends. The government must come forward and take some preventive actions”, said Soham Sarma of Henry Derozio Academy.

Nishant Das, another student of Agartala-based Umakanta Academy, who is appearing for the Madhyamik exams, said, “The fear of corona keeps hunting me whenever I start studying. In the exam centers there is no arrangement of screening. It is a matter of relief that there is no reported case in our state but there must be ample precautionary measures to fight the disease as the nature of the infection does not allow any loophole in terms of taking preventive measures”.

However, the Directorate of School Education Department, through an office memorandum, ordered all the exam venues to make arrangements of soap and adequate water. In places where arrangements of soap and water cannot be availed, alcohol-based hand sanitizers had been ordered to be made available.

“All the students appearing for the exams, along with the invigilators, will be asked to wash hands before entering the exam hall. Adequate measures are being taken by the school education department in order to contain the infection. A high level meeting has been convened on Monday at the civil secretariat where the final decisions will be taken”, said a highly placed source in the education department.

Meanwhile, sources in Tripura Board of Secondary education, the state board which controls the board exams, have said that apart from forming separate medical teams for the exam venues, there are no specific attempts taken regarding corona.

Highly placed sources in the civil secretariat said, “In the meeting convened at the civil secretariat, views will be exchanged among different departments regarding the closure of education institution, cinema halls and shopping malls”.

Uncertainty is also looming large regarding the ensuing ADC polls which could be deferred due to the corona threat. Notably, altogether, 27,142 students are appearing for the higher secondary exams along with 50,569 students appearing for the Madhyamik papers in 186 exam venues under 77 exam centers.
