Counting of assembly poll votes gets under way in Assam, Bengal, Kerala, Tamil Nadu, Puducherry

GUWAHATI: The counting of votes to the legislative assemblies of the four states -- Assam, West Bengal, Kerala and Tamil Nadu -- as well as the Union Territory of Puducherry, has begun amid tight security and strict COVID-19 safety protocols at 8 am this morning.

According to predictions made by all pollsters during the exit polls, the ruling Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP)-led four-party alliance is set to win a comprehensive majority in Assam, and the saffron party and is expected to retain power in the state for a second term.

Assam went to polls on March 27, April 1 and 6 in three phases for total 126 seats.

In West Bengal, after the state completed its record eighth and final phase of voting, exit polls conducted by several television news networks predicted a neck-and-neck fight between the ruling Trinamool Congress and the BJP, with the Left-Congress alliance in a distant third position.

West Bengal went to the polls from March 27 to April 29 in eight phases for a total of 292 seats.

Meanwhile, the Kerala exit polls conducted by various news channels predicted that the LDF is expected to win between 72 and 80 seats. The Congress-UDF coalition, on the other hand, is expected to win between 58 and 64 seats. According to the CNX poll, the NDA alliance is expected to win 1-5 seats.

Kerala has a 140-member assembly and went to the polls on April 6. The counting of votes begins with postal ballots.

And in Tamil Nadu, all polls predict a DMK-Left-Congress coalition victory, with one predicting 175-195 seats out of a total of 234.

The voting for a total of 234 Assembly seats in Tamil Nadu, was held on April 6, 2021, with a turnout of 71.79 per cent.

The counting of votes is underway in 75 different counting centers. The postal ballots will be counted first, followed by the votes cast in the EVMs.

Puducherry went to polls in a single phase on April 6 for the 30-member assembly.
