NEW DELHI: Over one lakh students in grades 10 and 12 have signed petitions urging the government to postpone or reschedule board exams scheduled for May, citing an increase in COVID-19 incidents.

Over the past two days, the hashtag "cancelboardexams2021" has been trending on Twitter.

Students across India are concerned about the spread of the disease and are urging authorities to cancel the exams. #CancelBoardExams memes and jokes have invaded Twitter and other social media sites.

The Central Board of Secondary Education (CBSE) and the Council for the Indian School Certificate Examinations (CISCE), have stated that appropriate safety arrangements have been made for students and that all COVID-19 guidelines will be followed during the exams.

Practical exams are usually held in January, with written exams starting in February and ending in March. However, due to the pandemic, the exams have been postponed and will now take place in May and June.

“The situation in India is deteriorating on a daily basis. They cancelled the remaining board exams when there were just a few cases in the country, and now that the cases are at an all-time high, they are preparing to open schools. We encourage the education minister to investigate this matter and cancel all exams scheduled for this year, as students are already under a lot of stress,” according to a Change.org petition.

Last week, the board announced that if a student fails to show up for ongoing realistic exams or a family member tests positive, the schools will re-test them at a later date. However, the official did not say if the same relaxation would be offered to students taking theory exams.
