COVID-19: 'Complete Lockdown' in Ahmedabad & Surat as Gujarat Cases Cross 6,000

New Delhi, May 7, 2020:

Civic authorities of Ahmedabad and Surat cities in Gujarat have decided to close all shops except those selling milk and medicines for a week, to prevent the spread of the coronavirus. This complete lockdown was called after the total number of positive cases in the state reached 6,669.

The order will be in effect from May 7 midnight in Ahmedabad, while in Surat it will be enforced from Saturday, officials said.

As many as 382 new COVID-19 cases were reported in the Gujarat on Wednesday, with 291 from Ahmedabad alone. In the highest till date, 5,559 samples were tested in 24 hours across the state.

According to ministry of Health and Family Welfare, there are 35,902 active patients in the country. In a positive turn, however, nearly 30% of the total coronavirus patients have recovered from the disease.

Maharashtra, meanwhile, continues to report a sharp spike in cases. Over 500 people tested positive for the novel coronavirus on Wednesday, bringing the total cases in the state to 16,758.

Mumbai alone witnessed 10,000 coronavirus cases."The situation in Maharashtra is certainly a matter of concern right now as 34 out of 36 districts are affected by COVID-19", Union Home Minister Dr Harsh Vardhan said.

In the Northeast Indian region, cases continue to see a surge in the states of Assam and Tripura.

In Tripura, 22 more people from the 138th battallion have tested positive for the coronavirus, taking the state’s tally to 64.

Assam, meanwhile, has reported 44 cases so far; the latest detection has been made in Cachar district.
