NEW DELHI: Manufacturers have slashed the price of Remdesivir, an antiviral that is used in the treatment of COVID-19, in response to the Centre’s appeal.

The decision to reduce the prices of the injection came only days after the Centre met with all current Remdesivir manufacturers to find ways to boost production and supply while also lowering prices.

The revision of prices has, however, led to a shortage of the medicine in the market due to the vast price difference.

Remdesivir manufacturers have reduced their prices by about 39 per cent as demand for the drug has increased.

The most significant price reduction came from Zydus Cadila, which reduced the price of a 100mg vial from Rs 2,800 to Rs 899.

Union minister for chemicals and fertilizers Sadananda Gowda tweeted: “In a huge relief to people in this crucial time, after Govt’s intervention, the price of #Remdesivir is now reduced! I am grateful to Pharma companies for standing along with PM @narendramodi's fight againt #Covid. Revised prices of major brands of #Remdesivir 100 mg/vial are.”

The major manufacturers/makers of 'RemdesIvir injection' have announced voluntary reductions in maximum retail price (MRP) as a result of the government's intervention, according to the department of pharmaceuticals' National Pharmaceutical Pricing Authority.
