GANGTOK: A COVID-19 positive patient in Sikkim committed suicide today in a makeshift COVID care centre at Indoor Gymnasium hall in Paljor Stadium, Gangtok.

The deceased person has been identified as Navin Chettri (40) from Mangan of North Sikkim.

According to police Navin was accused of a robbery case and was about to be sent to judicial custody, but before that, he was tested positive for COVID-19 and sent to a COVID care center where he committed suicide.

The Hamro Sikkim Party, saddened by the news, expressed condolences for the COVID patient's death and suggested that mental health problems be considered and addressed because there is an obvious sense of fear and panic.

"Control rooms with monitors for CCTV cameras and speakers should be set up 24 hours a day, 7 days a week at the facilities (Quarantine centers and covid care centers) so that patients can be dealt with on a regular basis and appropriate instructions can be delivered," said the Hamro Sikkim Party.

The party proposed these concepts last year on May 29, hence once again requested the state government to take them into consideration.
