GUWAHATI: Assam government today issued a revised SOP on COVID-19 to tackle the pandemic in the state.

Anyone caught violating the COVID-19 restrictions or the revised SOP issued by the state government during the curfew in Assam will be charged with an attempt to murder case, said Assam Police DGP Bhaskar Jyoti Mahanta in a press conference today.

He said, “If someone is caught violating the law, strict action will be taken against them, including the filing of an “attempt to murder” case.

Moreover, the DGP said that there are reports that people closed shops from the front and operate from the inside. In such cases, shopkeepers will be in serious trouble and booked under the NDMA Act.

He also said, those found planning a private event or group in violation of the SOP would be considered as traitors to society and will face charges similar to “attempt to murder.”

“Those planning private functions, parties, and get-togethers will face attempted to murder charges,” the DGP added.

He further stated that zero-tolerance zones would be identified in containment zones. In such locations, no drama will be tolerated. Many people use COVID-19 as an excuse to come out. If they are caught and found to be in violation of the SOP rules in any way, they will be imprisoned.

In case crowding spotted outside of any building, shopping mall, or market, in such situations, police can use ‘lathi charge’ even during the relaxation time (from 5:00 a.m. to 1:00 a.m.),” Mahanta added.
