Former Congress MLA Rupjyoti Kurmi on Tuesday said that he welcomes the Cow protection bill tabled by the Chief Minister in the assembly.

GUWAHATI: Former Congress MLA Rupjyoti Kurmi on Tuesday said that he welcomes the Cow protection bill tabled by the Chief Minister on the inaugural day of the budget session.

Kurmi said, "Cow gives us milk and we worship cattle. it even helps in farming. How can we kill and consume it. Hence eating the holy cow is not acceptable".

He further added that about 80 per cent of the people will welcome the bill while the other twenty per cent including AIUDF may oppose the bill.

Kurmi went on to say that he didn't feel like he was not an MLA anymore in the Assembly. "The way I was treated I didn't really feel that I don't hold the post anymore."

Taking about BJP which he recently joined, Kurmi said that Himanta Biswa Sarma will serve as the Chief Minister for next 20-25 years and 'Akhil Gogoi and even Congress will have greys by then.'

"If I get the ticket my victory is certain. I cannot defeated, he added.

On questioned about Akhil Gogoi, Kurmi said that rules need to be followed and if someone is not adhering to those, laws are there to take care of it.

The former MLA formally joined the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) last month.

He had gifted a trident to Assam chief minister Himanta Biswa Sarma during the ceremony.

In recent interviews, he has adopted the BJP talking points of ‘Bangladeshi eviction’ and another National Register of Citizens (NRC) drive while downplaying the threat posed by the foreigner-friendly Citizenship Amendment Act.
