DIBRUGARH: The curfew imposed in Assam to contain the spread of COVID-19 has been increased by two hours in Tinsukia and Dibrugarh districts depending on the COVID situation in the districts, said Assam chief minister Himanta Biswa Sarma.

The curfew which starts at 2 pm every day will now start at12 noon in these two districts from May 17.

"I have advised both the Deputy Commissioners of Dibrugarh and Tinsukia to increase the curfew hours by imposing it from 12 noon instead of present 2 pm in both the districts from 17th May with due consultation with eminent citizens, businessmen of the district," said CM Sarma.

The chief minister also advised enforcing micro containment zones in the districts.

However, he also advised that food and other necessities be given to the poor and needy.

"If we continue with this containment policy and increasing the daily test numbers to 5000 along with RTPCR tests then I am confident that in 10 to 15 days things will be much better," he added.

Moreover, visiting Assam Medical College and Hospital (AMCH) Dibrugarh with Union minister Rameswar Teli, Te tribe minister Sanjoy Kishan and sports minister Bimal Borah took a comprehensive review from the district commissioner, hospital authority, and senior officers on COVID situation precautionary measures & treatment facilities.

The chief minister also cautioned them against allowing people over the age of 50 to be quarantined at home and directed AMCH officers to strengthen odd hour management of COVID-19 patients and ensure the opening of the super-specialty hospital with 60 ICU beds as soon as possible.

Earlier yesterday CM Sarma briefing the media in Guwahati yesterday said that if the COVID-19 situation in cities–Guwahati, Tinsukia, and Dibrugarh does not improve in the next week, the state government will be forced to take tougher steps to stem the spread.

At least three major cities in the state, Dibrugarh, and Tinsukia, as well as Guwahati, have recently seen a spike in COVID cases.
