THIRUVANANTHAPURAM: Heavy rains and wind pounded Kerala as Cyclone Tauktae intensified, causing massive damage to homes and other public assets.

A two-storey house fell into the sea due to coastal erosion as heavy sea incursion disturbed daily life in coastal areas of Kerala's Kasargod.

The IMD has given a red alert in the districts of Ernakulam, Idukki, Thrissur, Palakkad, Malappuram, Kozhikode, Wayanad, Kannur and Kasargod.

Thunderstorms are expected in Alappuzha, Kottayam, Idukki, Ernakulam, Thrissur, Palakkad, Malappuram, Kozhikode, Wayanad, Kannur, and Kasaragod districts with heavy rainfall and gusty winds touching 40 km/h.

Due to the strong winds, several trees and electric poles were uprooted in Alappuzha. In certain areas of the district, this has resulted in power outages.

The sea has turned rough as a result of Cyclone Tauktae, wreaking havoc on Kerala's coastal villages.

Many low-lying parts of the state have been flooded like Kuttanad.

Many homes in Ernakulam's Thrissur district have been flooded as a result of the high tide.

In the southern state, relief efforts are underway with residents being relocated from impacted areas to nearby relief camps. Fortunately, no significant casualties have been confirmed so far.

The cyclonic storm's impact will be felt in the southeast, east-central, and northeast Arabian Seas, the Lakshadweep Island, and the Maldives region causing heavy rainfall in Kerala, Karnataka, Goa, Maharashtra, and Gujarat as well as the coastal and adjoining districts of all these states, according to the weather department.
