TAMULPUR: Prime Minister Narendra Modi today said the Congress-led grand alliance in Assam has already accepted defeat and it was clear from one of its allies’ statement in an election meeting in Lower Assam yesterday.

Apparently referring to All India United Democratic Front (AIUDF) chief Badruddin Ajmal’s son Abdur Rahim Ajmal’s statement that there would be a daarhi-topi-lungi (beard-skull cap-loincloth) government at Dispur, Modi said: “Nothing can be more insulting to Assam than this.”

“I’ve heard some people yesterday announced something which had double meaning. One is they have already accepted defeat, and the other is they have describe what would be the attire of the people in government and how will they look like. Nothing can be more insulting to Assam than this.

“It is a revelation of some people’s design to capture power five years later. So, I appeal to all of us to turn up in huge numbers to cast your votes and defeat the sinister designs of those people,” Modi said addressing a massive rally at Nagrijuli here today.

Addressing an election meeting of party candidate Foni Talukdar at Bhabanipur in newly formed Bajali district, Rahim yesterday said in Bhabanipur: “We’ve not got freedom from poverty in last 70 years of independence. But, this time we are going to be free … This time there will be a government of the poor people. There will be your daarhi-topi-lungi government in Assam this time …”

Earlier, he started saying that the people are no longer ready to tolerate the parties that had kept Assam disturbed for decades.

“I can see the Mahajath’s mahajooth (great lie) has been exposed here too ... It appears that you all have already decided to give your mandate for an NDA (national Democratic Alliance) government. The people are not ready to tolerate the people who have insulted Assam time and again … The people of Assam are not ready to accept those who kept Assam violent and instability for decades together even for a single moment,” Modi said in his last rally in the state for the current elections.
