Birthday wishes flood in as Dalai Lama turns 86 today

NEW DELHI: Tenzin Gyatso, the 14th Dalai Lama, turned 86 today.

Each year, his birthday celebrations in Dharamshala, Himachal Pradesh, were one of the most important events for the Tibetan population. However, this year Dalai Lama’s birthday will not be celebrated in Tsuglagkhang (popularly known as the Dalai Lama temple/monastery) in McLeodganj, Dharamshala, due to the ongoing COVID-19 outbreak.

Rather, the Kashag (Cabinet), the Central Tibetan Administration’s highest executive office, has issued an advisory advising people not to hold any congregations at all due to the pandemic situation.

Birthday wishes for his holiness Dalai Lama have been pouring in from all walks of life.

Trungkar is celebrated with majesty, glory, and joyful enthusiasm every year.
The day will be commemorated with the same zeal this year, but in Covid-appropriate manner.
In light of ongoing measures to contain the COVID-19 outbreak, CTA will broadcast the official Trungkar celebration live on Tibet TV, allowing everyone to participate virtually from the comfort of their own homes.
