Ninong Ering, Pasighat West MLA, Arunachal Pradesh, dashed off a letter to the Prime Minister Narendra Modi seeking timely intervention on River Siang issue as the dam burst on Southern Tibet poses threat to the state and Assam.

Due to earthquake, a natural dam was created in Yigong Tsangpo , a tributary of Yorlung Tsangpo in Southern Tibet.

“We need a holistic system upgrade for disaster risk assessment and dissemination of information to Arunachal Pradesh public. We also need automatic weather stations deployed at all border points where rivers come in including Subansiri, Lohit, zemithang Chu and Siang,” the MLA said.

He further said that Central Water Commission needs to collect and disseminate advanced flow rate data. He urged the PM to instruct concerned authorities to look into matter and ask the Chinese counterpart to share the latest information about river status again which has been stopped from last two years.

“We appreciate the Government initiative to combat the Pandemic but a matter of concern has arisen. So i am writing this letter once again in regard to the Siang (Brahmaputra) river which is once again become a threat due to a landslide occurred, due to earth quake and area in Nien Ching Tangkula Sham area and created a natural Dam in Yigong Tsangpo tributaries of Yorlung Tsangpo in southern Tibet. As you are aware that the floods in Arunachal, Assam and other States of India have been very devastating this time, and this Dam bursts during this monsoon season then the downstream would be trendous,” he stated in the letter.

Besides, he demanded automatic weather stations deployed at all border points where rivers come in. “SDMA, NDMA, NRSC and State remote sensing centres need to work together with competent people regularly integrating earthquake alerts, precipitation data, radar data, in a model. Need to hire people that are good at data analysis, also there is a need for field work in these glacial regions of Arunachal to understand risk,” Ering added.
