Delhi CM Seeks Army's Help amid Violent "CAA Clash"

New Delhi, February 26, 2020:

Delhi Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal has sought for Indian Army's support to quell the unprecedented protests over the Citizenship Amendment Act or CAA in the national capital.

Kejriwal has sought for help from the Home Ministry to bring the situation under control. As many as twenty people have died in the clashes till the filing of this report.

Situation remains tense as protests continue in Delhi's northeast areas of Maujpur, Jaffrabad, Chandpur and Karawal Nagar. It needs mention here that the agitation, which initially was sparked with some 600 people’s demonstration demanding the repealing of the new law, turned communal within hours.

Students of Jawaharlal Nehru University (JNU) and Jamia Millia Islamia had gathered outside CM Kejriwal's residence to take action on the ongoing communal tension.

Taking to Twitter, Kejriwal said, "I have been in touch wid large no of people whole nite. Situation alarming. Police, despite all its efforts, unable to control situation and instil confidence Army shud be called in and curfew imposed in rest of affected areas immediately Am writing to Hon’ble HM to this effect."

People representing two opposite groups, one in favor of CAA and the other in protest of CAA started pelting stones at each other.

According to reports, mobs with lathis roamed around freely in the streets in northeast Delhi. Section 144 was imposed in the Maujpur, Jaffrabad, Chandbag and Karawal Nagar and authorities had issued shoot at sight orders.

It may be mentioned here that over 150 people have been injured in the clashes. The violence-hit areas continued to remain tense on Wednesday morning, with security beefed up in the areas.
