NEW DELHI: In the wake of the current COVID-19 situation in the state the national capital's lockdown has been extended by a week, declared chief minister Arvind Kejriwal today.

Announcing the decision, CM Kejriwal tweeted, "Lockdown in Delhi is being extended by one week."

The new lockdown was supposed to end on Monday (May 3), but it has been extended for another week.

The restrictions in Delhi were put in effect for the first time on April 19.

emergency services such as pharmacies, groceries, vegetable shops, and so on will be allowed to operate during the lockdown maintaining social distance by the shop owners and customers, according to the order.

Delhi has been experiencing a steady increase in COVID-19 cases for over a fortnight, resulting in a severe shortage of hospital beds.

Deaths have also increased, and the city's crematorium is nearly full. For days, hospitals have been complaining of a shortage of oxygen to treat patients.

Earlier in the day, CM Kejriwal announced that the  COVID-19 vaccination programme for people aged 18 to 44 will begin on May 3 in the national capital.
