NEW DELHI: Meenakshi Ashley Harris, niece of US Vice President Kamala Harris, extending support to the farmers' protest in India, stated that "the most populous democracy is under assault."

"It’s no coincidence that the world’s oldest democracy was attacked not even a month ago, and as we speak, the most populous democracy is under assault. This is related. We ALL should be outraged by India’s internet shutdowns and paramilitary violence against farmer protesters," Harris, who is an American lawyer, children's book author, producer, and founder of the Phenomenal Woman Action Campaign, wrote in a tweet.

Harris, in another tweet, wrote, "Militant nationalism is just as potent a force in US politics as it is in India or anyplace else. It can only be stopped if people wake up to the reality that FASCIST DICTATORS aren’t going anywhere. Not unless: 1) we organize and 2) THERE ARE CONSEQUENCES FOR THE CAPITOL ATTACK."

"Trump may have left office, but look around: the tide is still rising," Harris further added.

A Twitter frenzy broke out on Wednesday when American pop singer Rihanna on Tuesday night posted a news link on India's farmers' protest and tweeted, "why aren't we talking about this?!" It triggered widespread outrage from Indians questioning Rihanna's credentials and knowledge about India's internal matters.

This was followed by Greta Thunberg, the celebrity teenager famous for her environmental activism, tweeting, "We stand in solidarity with the #FarmersProtest in India."
