Dibrugarh Durga Puja Organizes 'DJ Night' in Front of the Goddess, Condemned

Dibrugarh, October 6, 2019:

At a time when 'old' is giving way to 'new', it seems like the Gods and Goddesses too are not exempt from the cultural shift that is now sweeping Indian society. A sign of the changing times was on full display at a Dibrugarh Durga Puja pandal which hosted a 'DJ Night' on the occasion of Maha Saptami, the first day of the puja.

The puja pandal was turned into a dance floor and the stage was taken over by a DJ who was playing Electronic Dance Music (EDM), the new flavor of the month. Not only this, an entry fee of Rs. 500 was charged by the organizers as well.

After the footage of this DJ Night went viral on social media, it drew the anger of old timers, who fear that cultural erosion might soon end the rituals and customs which have been followed by our ancestors for many eons.

An angry local said, "I am disappointed with the Jhalukpara Durga Puja committee of Dibrugarh. Highly deplorable, DJ dance in front of Durga maa after pran pratistha and commercialising it by putting entry fee of Rs 500. Puja Committe should publicly apologise for defiling the sanctity of Durga Maa".

This event has sent shockwaves across the state and drawn the condemnation of many. However, it posits a rather interesting question: Is it necessary for the old customs to be infused with the newer trends to stay relevant in the digital age?
