Did you know? Niuland could become the next district of Nagaland

DIMAPUR: Niuland, which is a sub-division currently under Dimapur district in Nagaland, could well become the next (13th) district of the state as the process to do so is arguably underway.

The Dimapur District Planning and Development Board (DPDB) members Tuesday approved and recommended to the higher authority the proposal of upgrading Niuland ADC subdivision to a full-fledged district.

The decision was taken by the house during the DPDB meeting held on July 6 under the chairmanship of Zhaleo Rio, Advisor, Sericulture, Excise and Minority Affairs who is also the chairman of DPDB Dimapur, the DIPR confirmed.

During the meeting, PHED Minister Jacob Zhimomi put up the proposal for creating Niuland District. The details of the said proposal were placed before the DPDB by the ADC of Niuland as directed by the Minister, wherein it was accepted by the DPDB and has been forwarded to the government for consideration.

The ADC of Niuland has informed that at present, there are 109 villages under Niuland subdivision with 4 administrative circles and it covers an area of 454 square kilometres.

The expected Population of the Niuland Subdivision in 2020-2021 is between 11,520 and 14,726.

Niuland is situated in a strategic location geographically, sharing borders with two major towns of Assam and connectivity with important districts of Nagaland including Kohima.

Currently, Noklak is the youngest and the 12th District of Nagaland and was inaugurated on January 20, 2021. It is located in the easternmost part of India. Noklak district is the headquarter of Khiamniungan Naga tribe.

At the present moment, it is unclear when Niuland will get a 'district' status. Presently, the demand for Shamator as a district by the Yimchungers under the Eastern Naga Peoples' Organization (ENPO) is said to be more earnest.
