AGARTALA:  Top gymnast Dipa Karmakar was honoured with the ‘Tripura Bibhusan’ award on the occasion of the 49th Statehood Day celebrations at Rabindra Shatabarshiki Bhawan in Agartala.

The programme to mark the formation of Tripura State was celebrated at Rabindra Shatabarshiki Bhavan in Agartala on Thursday evening.

Deb handed over a memento, cash prize and other gifts to 'Padma Shri' Dipa Karmakar and five others. Notably, this was the first time that the Government decided to honour eminent personalities.

While Olympian gymnast Dipa Karmakar received the Tripura Bhibushan Award, Chess player Arshiya Das got the Tripura Bhusan Award. Five persons received the Nagarik Samman and nine individuals were awarded the Purna Nagarik Samman Award.

Governor Ramesh Bais, Deputy Chief Minister Jishnu Debbarma, cabinet ministers -- Manoj Kanti Deb and Mevar Kumar Jamatia also attended the programme.

Making an address, Deb stated that his government was working to achieve purnata (self-dependence) and making Tripura a model state in agriculture, entrepreneurship and law and order, and other indices.

Tripura and Manipur, both erstwhile princely states, merged with the Indian Union in October 1949. Along with Meghalaya, they were a part of Assam before that and became full-fledged states on January 21, 1972.
