NEW DELHI: Amid the ongoing COVID crisis in the world, rumours, and reports of the COVID-19 vaccine affecting people’s fertility have emerged.

Thus, countering such reports and rumours, the Union Ministry of Health and Family Welfare (MoHFW) stated that there is no strong evidence to prove claims that the COVID-19 vaccine has harmed people's infertility.

On June 21, the ministry issued a statement debunking the rumours, saying, "All vaccines and their ingredients are evaluated first on animals and then in humans to assess if they have any such side effects."

Vaccines are only approved for use when their safety and efficacy have been established, it added.

"In the past few days, certain media reports have highlighted the prevalence of various superstitions and myths in a section of Healthcare Workers (HCWs) and Frontline Workers (FLWs) including the nurses. Such misinformation and rumours were observed to be spreading in the community during the vaccination drives earlier too e.g. polio and measles-rubella," the ministry said.

"Furthermore, in order to curb the prevalent myth regarding infertility due to COVID 19 vaccination, the Government of India has clarified (

The COVID-19 vaccination is safe for all lactating women, said the National Expert Group on Vaccine Administration for COVID-19 (NEGVAC).

There is no need to halt or pause breastfeeding before or after the vaccination, it added.
