GUWAHATI: Don Bosco School located in Guwahati's Panbazar area will in all likelihood wear a deserted look on Christmas day this year, as the authorities have decided not told hold any grand celebration due to the COVID-19 protocols that have to be strictly followed.

Even as the discovery of a new COVID-19 strain has put a dampener on the celebrations across the world, with the Governments locking down their doors to prevent an outbreak, the students of the school, renowned for the yearly Christmas celebration, will stay put in their homes as no special celebration has been planned.

If last year the raging protests against the Citizenship Amendment Act played dampener, this year, the spread of the COVID-19 has again played a spoilsport and dampened the festive mood in the school.

"Although the celebrations will be held in the Church by following the COVID-19 protocols, we are hesitant about performing celebrations in the school premises as we are only allowing students from standards 9 through 12, for safety purposes," says Father Sebastian Matthew, the Principal of the School.

Mr. Matthew also informed Inside Northeast that 'Jingle Mingle', the school's flagship programme that is held annually every Christmas, has been cancelled for the second year running.

"This year, we are having to cancel it due to the COVID-19 protocols. Last year, it was because of the CAA. There won't be a 'Jingle Mingle' this year as there are concerns regarding safety of the students," he said.

So will the teachers of the school be celebrating Yuletide while the students are cooped up indoors with their 'online classes.' "Some of the teachers affiliated with the Don Bosco Church might attend the official function there, but I don't see the rest of them coming to the school," Matthew further added.
