New Delhi, January 20, 2020:

The Department of Telecom (DoT) has sought Rs. 48,000 Crore from Oil India Ltd. In its past statutory dues, an order which the latter plans to challenge in Telecom Disputes Settlement and Appellate Tribunal (TDSAT).

The DoT has asked Oil India to pay the sum in principal dues along with interest and penalty for using optic fibre network for internal communication.

Oil India Chairman and Manager Director Sushil Chandra Mishra said that it had received the notice, which cites January 23 as the deadline and added that it would challenge the demand notice of Rs. 48,000 Crore in the TDSAT.

It may be mentioned here that the Supreme Court had ordered that non-telecom revenues earned by firms using airwaves allocated by the government should be considered for calculating statutory dues. DoT has asked Oil India to pay the said sum, which is said to be double the net worth of Oil India. It has totaled all the revenues earned by a company in the past 15 years and raised the demand.
