Majuli Majuli

Guwahati, January 2, 2019:

The protests over the Citizenship (Amendment) Bill have divided the people of Assam into two factions: the pro-Bill faction (who mostly support the BJP) and the ones who are against it. After the thrashing of AASU members by BJP workers inside a Nalbari jail, the violence has spilled over onto the streets, with the AASU demanding payback to every single blow their supporters received.

Majuli, the peaceful river-island and the heart of Assamese culture, has gained added significance after the appointment of one of its sons, Sarbananda Sonowal, as the Chief Minister of the state. But trouble has reached the shores of the serene river island as well. Yesterday, scuffles broke out between supporters of the BJP and Congress parties at Gormurh in Majuli district. On one hand, BJP supporters were protesting the beating up of BJP’s Tinsukia President Lakheswar Moran.  Meanwhile, Congress supporters were burning the effigies of PM Narendra Modi, Home Minister Rajnath Singh, BJP Assam President Ranjeet Das and CM Sarbananda Sonowal to protest against the amendment of the Citizenship Bill.

A fight soon broke out between these two parties. One side chanted “BJP go back” while the other responded with chants of “Congress go back”. The peace in Majuli was disrupted by the voices of the protestors which seemed to be echoing from all directions. The situation soon spiralled out of control as both the parties came to blows and authorities were forced to separate the two sides. The altercation between the two sides lasted for over two hours.

It is to be mentioned that Congress spokesperson Phiju Dutta has come forward and alleged that his party members were physically harmed by the BJP supporters.
