Tura, October 14, 2019:

A top leader of the Garo National Liberation Army (GNLA), Nikrak M. Sangma has been arrested by Meghalaya Police on Sunday, October 13.

Information from sources had indicated that cadres of militant groups such as GNLA, ULFA, and some Bangladeshi jihadis were trying to regroup and revive militancy in the Garo Hills of Meghalaya under the leadership of one Nikrak M. Sangma alias Kaltush.

However, on October 13, 2019, the senior GNLA cadre Nikrak was apprehended by a specially-constituted police from Rongara area. He had area over to India from Bangladesh and was returning back when he was intercepted by the South Garo Hills police en route to Bangladesh.

He was apparently in the guise of a local villager when he was identified and arrested very close to the Indo-Bangla border. He had joined the GNLA in the year 2011 and he belonged to the 3rd batch of the GNLA. He crossed over to Bangladesh in 2015.

Since then, he was operating from Bangladesh and was supplying uniforms, weapons, ammunitions, to the GNLA prior to the death of Commander in Chief of GNLA, Sohan D. Shira, in 2018. While most of the cadres surrendered, Nikrak continued to stay in Bangladesh and supporting militant groups.

Nikrak is also wanted in several acts of terrorism in several districts of Meghalaya. Police informed that he will be forwarded to the Magistrate.
