Ajay Devgn, who worked with the filmmaker tweeted, “My equation with Nishikant was not just about Drishyam, a film which he directed with Tabu and me. It was an association that I cherished. He was bright; ever-smiling. He has gone too soon. RIP Nishikant.”

Nishikant Kamat made his directorial debut with Marathi film Dombivali Fast in 2005. His Bollywood debut was Mumbai Meri Jaan, also starring Irrfan. Kamat was also a very popular director of Marathi films. He had called the shots for hits like Riteish Deshmukh starrer ‘Lai Bhaari’ as well as Swwapnil Joshi’s ‘Fugay’.

His biggest hit was Ajay Devgn-Tabu starrer Drishyam, which was a remake of the Malayalam movie of the same name. Talking about the same, Kamat had said, "I looked at this film purely in terms of a script. I didn't look at it as something which was made before and that I had to replicate. There's a director's perspective on how you make the film, how you edit it, and how you present it and I did it my way."

Not only a director but Nishikant has also acted in a few movies too namely Hava Aney Dey, Saatchya Aat Gharat, 404 Error Not Found, Rocky Handsome, Fugay, Daddy, Julie 2, Bhavesh Joshi.
