Easy money trap? Tripura inches towards a digital cheat

Huge returns and no work; in the pretext of these two promises many people, specifically youth, are being alluded to join various digital platforms in Tripura having no authenticated information about in lieu money, police said.

Speaking to this reporter, a highly placed source in the police department said, “We have been informed about the probable financial mischief being carried in the state but we have nothing to do. The people who are directly involved in this business are tightlipped and not sharing any details of the business model to police. It has become a very big chain in the state and if these digital platforms vanish someday, people will be left with nothing to lose”.

The system, sources said, is to enroll people with some websites which assure them to get their money tripled in one year. To join the programme, the newcomer has to pay a sum. At the end of the year, the invested money gets tripled and the total sum is paid in weekly installments, the police source said, adding that the business model also assured spot benefits if someone was referred by one enlisted person.

A senior officer in Tripura posted in the economic offence branch said, “I don’t feel these companies have any valid documents to carry out direct financial transactions. The way these companies are being entertained by the people of the state, it may once again remind people of the disastrous Chit Fund scam”.

This correspondent reached out to a collaborator of this business who said, all the operations are valid and his company is registered with the Indian government. The person however failed to describe as to why his company was not issuing any money receipts and was changing the view of its website every week. There were also questions regarding the content available on the website but he readily refused to answer that.

“Since people are getting their returns as promised, they are reluctant to speak out. When the entire system will elope so as the other such companies have done in other states, people will rush to the Tripura police stations for sure”, a police officer said in disappointment.
