Guwahati, February 29, 2020:

Amid the communal conflagrations in national capital New Delhi which have left over 37 persons dead, the widening gulf between the people of Assam over political differences came to the fore when social media trolls took to Facebook to wish harm on anti-CAA advocate Zubeen Garg, signalling an "end" of humanity.

Zubeen's hospitalization in Guwahati yesterday following a sudden illness caused a situation of hue-and-cry in Assam with several of his followers . Tears flowed freely and prayers were recited outside mosques, temples, and churches as Assam in its entirety stood still for a moment to await news of its biggest star's health status.

However, trolls were soon seen posting photos of Zubeen on social media, alongwith messages wishing harm upon him. Some of the trolls went so far as to wish for the 'Kanchanjangha' star's death. One particularly vile post in Assamese, posted by user Nirav Hazarika read: "Zubeen daa apuni hunkale hustho hoi uthok. Kintu jiman khini CAAr birudhe siyor bakhor korile apuni morileu apontti nai (Zubeen daa be well soon. However, considering the hue-and-cry you raised over the CAA, no problem even if you are to die."

Bonasmi Bora, a youth from Assam, weighing in on the situation, says, "Zubeen is someone who is fighting hard for the people of Assam. During his times of illness, if someone is saying such things due to a lack of humanity, it proves a lack of humanity. Zubeen is such a beloved star and considered an icon of the youth. The emotion surrounding the aura of Zubeen is something else as he has also affixed himself to various charitable causes. Thus, to say such mean horrible things about him is truly abominable. Is this the end of humanity??".

However, much to Assam's credit, leaders from across the political spectrum have come together to take stock of Zubeen's health. Earlier today, Assam CM Sarbananda Sonowal, who has been at the receiving end of Zubeen's criticisms after the Government's implementation of the CAA in December, visited the hospital where Zubeen is recovering, Nemcare about his health. The Chief Minister also wished a speedy recovery to the singing sensation.
