GUWAHATI: Amid Darrang district and police administration’s bid to free the government’s land of Garukhuti area under Sipajhar revenue circle from encroachers, several police personnel were grievously injured. Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma today spoke on the Darrang firing incident.

CM Himanta Biswa today said that the drive was initiated with an agreed principle that the landless people will be provided with 2 acres of land each. He further added that the government did not expect any resistance but around 10,000 people gheraoed the Police, used violence, forcing the police to retaliate.

He further added, “Our 11 police personnel have been injured. We will carry out inquiry on how cameraman came into the scene, and why he tried to overpower that particular person. We have ordered a judicial probe.”

According to the CM, the eviction drive was urgent and was not done overnight. Congress delegation had met him and agreed on land allotment to landless.

On speaking whether the eviction drive in Sipajhar will continue, Assam CM said, “You have to continue. Government can not allot 30-40 acres land like that, where will others go? But yes, I'll talk to them once again, not important to involve police while evicting people, negotiations help.”

The Assam Government on Thursday decided to institute a judicial inquiry into the Dhalpur firing incident which claimed lives of two civilians and injured several including police personnel.

According to an official release, the inquiry would be conducted under the chairmanship of a retired judge of Gauhati High Court.

Continuing the eviction process, the Assam government today went for eviction in Dhalpur are of Sipajhar where they met with severe protest from the locals over the eviction which led to a clash between the police and the locals.
