GUWAHATI: Assam Police yesterday arrested a woman for falsely claiming Deputy Superintendent of Police (DSP) at the Assam Chief Minister's vigilance cell, following a first information report (FIR) filed by the accused's house proprietor.

Kabita Sarma, a resident of Nalbari, had been living in a flat on rent at Saraswati Apartment Jatia, Guwahati.

The flat is owned by Bonnylina Baruah and currently, it's being caretaken by her father Pradip Baruah, who had filed an FIR against Miss Sarma on March 13 at Dispur Police Station over non-payment of rent.

In his FIR, Barua accused Kabita Sarma of claiming to be a DSP at CM vigilance. Baruah said that she had not paid rent since June 2020 and was living rent-free giving excuses of her undue salary for the past several months.

Finally, the proprietor of the flat filed an FIR at the local police station where he stated, "I am feeling that she is spoiling the good image of the chief minister's vigilance cell as well as the Assam police department; besides cheating the house owner."

"Yesterday Pradip Baruah came to my office to enquire about Kabita Sarma...whether she works here. Baruah said that the tenant had claimed to be a DSP at the CM vigilance and would be promoted to SP rank by this November," said Rosie Kalita, the Superintendent of police of the CM's vigilance cell.

"She had accepted that she was claiming to be a DSP. But sometimes she also says that she's a High Court advocate and sometimes she says she is a teacher. We will get to know more during the investigation," SP Kalita added.

In a recorded phone call, the accused has been heard saying that she went to Delhi to arrest Gautam Baruah, the former chairman of Assam Building and Other Construction Workers Welfare Board, Guwahati (ABOCWWB) as a part of the CM vigilance cell.

A case has been filed under IPC sections 406/419/420 against Kabita Sarma and investigations are underway.
