Farmers' protest “hero” charged with attempt to murder

NEW DELHI: The Delhi Chalo march kicked off today with thousands of farmers present in the National capital New Delhi since Friday evening for protesting against the farm bills passed by the Central government in September. Over a thousand farmers faced several obstacles from the police including the use of tear gas, water cannon, barricades and barbed wires for entering Delhi.

According to reports, The farmers from Punjab, Haryana protesting in Delhi got support from Madhya Pradesh, Rajasthan, Uttarakhand, and Uttar Pradesh, who will join the protest in a few days.

Protests were observed on Friday in Maharashtra and Andhra Pradesh as well. There could be a possible stand-off on the Delhi-Uttar Pradesh interstate border on Saturday as farmers from UP, Uttarakhand and MP will try to enter the Capital from there.

Thousands of farmers from Punjab and Haryana were allowed to enter through the Tikri border on Friday evening and hold their protest at Burari in north-west Delhi against the three newly enacted farm laws -- The Farmers’ Produce Trade and Commerce (Promotion and Facilitation) Act, 2020, the Farmers (Empowerment and Protection) Agreement on Price Assurance and Farm Services Act, 2020 and the Essential Commodities (Amendment) Act 2020 -- passed by Parliament in its monsoon session.

Meanwhile, A young man from Haryana's Ambala who was seen scaling a police water cannon to turn it off in one of the most iconic moments of the protest march of farmers towards Delhi so far has been charged with attempt to murder.

The son of a farmers' body leader Jai Singh, Navdeep has been charged with attempt to murder which carries a maximum penalty of life imprisonment, rioting, and violation of COVID-19 rules.
