Hailakandi, August 312019 :

The final publication of the National Register of Citizens (NRC) in Hailakandi district passed off peacefully with no untoward incidents reported from any part of the district on Saturday.

Exactly at 10 am, the final NRC was made available in the Deputy Commissioner's office, in the Circle Offices and NRC Seva Kendras across the district. Most people preferred to log on to the NRC website to find out if his or her name was included in the final list.

Taking no chances, the administration beefed up security in the vulnerable places and in all the 57 NSKs.

A close scrutiny was kept on social media, with the administration issuing stern warnings against those spreading misinformation and objectionable posts.

All day long, Deputy Commissioner Keerthi Jalli and Superintendent of Police Pabindra Kumar Nath closely monitored the law and order situation and ensured that no untoward incidents took place. DC Jalli visited remote NSKs at Dholai Molai, Monipur, Sultanicherra and Rupacherra. "Situation is peaceful and under close watch, " she said.

Adequate security was deployed, including sensitive areas, with patrolling around the clock to keep trouble mongers at bay. The entire district was divided into three zones with a DSP in charge for effective security coordination and management. It may be mentioned here that Section 144 CrPC is in force throughout the district.

Thana level and awareness meetings were held to sensitise the people on the final NRC list and not to panic in case their names do not figure in the final list as other legal options were available, including filing of petition before foreigners’ tribunals, the time limit of which has been extended from 60 to 120 days.

Both the heads of civil and police administrations appealed to the people not to be swayed by rumours and to get in touch with them in case of any doubts through the toll free and landline numbers.

The administration held a meeting with the political leaders, senior citizens and other stake holders prior to the publication of final NRC and sought their support and cooperation for smooth and hassle-free publication of the final NRC in a peaceful manner.

The administration thanked the people for their support and cooperation for peaceful conduct of the whole NRC exercise.
