FIR against trekkers suspected of causing Dzükou Valley fire

Kohima: The Southern Angami Youth Organisation (SAYO), tasked with protecting the Dzükou Valley, has filed a first information report (FIR) against a group of trekkers suspected to be behind the outbreak of the fire that ravaged the valley for days on end. The Dzukou Valley fire broke out on December 29.

According to reports in the media, the SAYO lodged its FIR was lodged at the Khuzama police station under Kohima district and also provided video clips of trekkers trespassing Dzükou Valley. The youth body believes that the trespassers later fled to the Manipur side of the valley.

National Disaster Response Force (NDRF), Nagaland Police and Army personnel left Dzükou base camp on Tuesday after successfully dousing the Dzükou Valley fire which raged for 13 days. However, some volunteers from SAYO as well as Kohima Forest Division (KFD) are said to be camping at the side to keep a close vigil.

However, Sayo informed this newspaper that their volunteers and some personnel from Kohima Forest Division (KFD) are still camping in Dzükou to keep a close vigil of the vicinity.

According to a statement, the Air Force airlifted firefighting equipment of the NDRF and State Disaster Response Force stationed at Dzukou valley base camp to Jakhama military helipad.

The firefighting equipment included NDRF tents, firefighting suits and batteries, among others.

IAF spokesperson Wing Commander Ratnakar Singh said four Mi-17V5 helicopters equipped with bambi buckets sprayed huge quantities of water to douse the wildfire.
