First phase of Assam assembly polls gets under way; 4.43% cast votes till 9 am

GUWAHATI: The first phase of polling of the Assam assembly election 2021 got under way with 4.43 per cent of voters exercising their franchise till 9 am.

Voting is taking place at 11,537 polling stations in 47 Assembly constituencies of 12 districts of the state. Polling will continue till 6 pm.

As many as 37 incumbent Members of Legislative Assembly (MLA), including 24 from the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP), six each from Congress and Asom Gana Parishad (AGP) and one from the All India United Democratic Front (AIUDF) are in the fray for re-election.

A total of 81,09,815 voters will decide the fate of 264 candidates, including 78 independents and 23 women, from across various parties and political affiliations who are in the fray.

The voters include 40,77,210 male voters, 40,32,481 female and 124 third gender.

The early birds at the polling stations have been felecitated with a gamocha and a sapling in every polling sttaion.

Meanwhile, due to the coronavirus pandemic, polling time has been extended by an hour till 6 pm.
