Guwahati, June 6, 2019:

Former Assam Chief Minister Tarun Gogoi has expressed serious concern about the ongoing encroachment of Assam’s only Ramsar site Deepor Beel.

Endorsing the #LetsSaveDeeporBeel awareness campaign launched by Inside Northeast, Tarun Gogoi said, “For a city like Guwahati, Deepor Beel plays a very important role. I do feel we must save Deepor Beel. We can’t allow it to be encroached, can’t allow it to be destroyed.”

According to the three-term Chief Minister of Assam without water body, the climate will change.

“It is for our own interest we should preserve Deepor Beel. By destroying it we are going to affect our own existence,” Gogoi said adding that everybody is concerned for the preservation of Deepor Beel.

Appreciating Inside Northeast’s initiative of #LetsSaveDeepor Beel, Gogoi said, “If Deepor Beel is not preserved it will cause immense loss and lead to ecological imbalance. It will affect the life of human beings as well as that of animals.”

Deepor Beel has both biological and environmental importance besides being the only major stormwater storage basin for Guwahati city. It is considered as one of the staging sites for migratory birds in India, and some of the large congregations of aquatic birds in Assam during winter.

Because of the richness of avian fauna it enjoyed, Deepor Beel has been selected as one of the Important Bird Area (IBA) sites by Birdlife International. Deepor Beel has also been designated as a Ramsar Site in November 2002.

Please support the campaign #LetsSaveDeeporBeel and create mass awareness in order to make it a successful one.
