Imphal, Mar 28, 2019:

Former Lok Sabha MP Kim Gangte has resigned from the primary membership of the Bharatiya Janata Party over denial of party ticket to her for the Outer Manipur Lok Sabha Constituency.

The ex-MP was spokesperson and overall Hill Area in charge of BJP Manipur Pradesh. She submitted her resignation letter to the party president on Wednesday.

Addressing reporters at Manipur Press Club, Kim Gangte said, “BJP leadership has betrayed me. They do not want to empower the woman, the weaker sections in society. All woman workers in BJP have no future”.

Gangte said that denial of ticket to her was not the main reason why she left the party but the great ‘injustice’, ‘betrayal’ committed by the party leadership.

She recalled that she started working for the people after leaving her college lecture job. Under her leadership, she could strengthen Trinamool Congress party in the state. However, she was compelled to leave Trinamool Congress party as the central high command failed to address the woes of the people in the state.

Having left the party, she joined BJP Manipur Pradesh following a request by its president and the MLAs in 2017 to collectively work for the strengthening of the party. The BJP national leadership even verbally assured to allot ticket to her for the Outer Manipur PC seat in Lok Sabha election 2019. The election has come but BJP leadership has failed to keep their commitment. It’s a great betrayal, said an emotional Gangte.

Alleging that the present BJP organization is functioning at the behest of favoritism and nepotism, Kim Gangte said that members without powerful backings have no future in the party. She alleged that BJP ticket for the outer seat was allotted to Benjamin at the diktat and recommendation by a Kuki militant group which is under SoO. It shows that the present BJP government has nexus with militants, she alleged.

“BJP government is raising slogan for woman empowerment through ‘Beti bachao, beti padao’ mission. If the party sincerely wanted to empower women, the ticket must have been allotted to me, the lone woman MP candidate who vied for a party ticket. I deserved the ticket as I have a close connection at the grass root level”, she added.
