Former NDFB militants to receive pre-recruitment training from para-military forces & Assam police

KOKRAJHAR: Bodoland Territorial Region (BTR) chief Promod Boro today said that paramilitary forces and Assam police will train surrendered militants of the National Democratic Front of Bodoland (NDFB) from next week onwards so that they can be recruited.

Boro said that a meeting was convened yesterday to discuss the pre-recruitment training of the NDFB cadres.

Boro also announced that many of the former militants will be given skill training -- many of them middle-aged and ineligible for government service -- so that they can become self-reliant.

From today, SIRD, PNRD, Bodoland government, Assam police, and several other organizations will begin the training and this process will continue for the foreseeable time. Through skill training, a process will begin to ensure that they will be able to earn their keep via the government's various schemes," Boro said.

Meanwhile, the BTR chief has also lauded the current chief minister for promising to implement all the clauses of the Accord within 6 months.

4,000 cadres will be given a sum of Rs. 4 lakh each to aid in their rehabilitation. "While Bodoland administration will hand over Rs. 50 crore, the Assam government will hand over a sum of Rs. 110 crore."

Boro also said that efforts are underway to hand out justice to the cadres of the outfit who are currently jailed.

"We are segregating the cases -- which are heinous crimes, which are non-heinous crimes, which are the CBI cases, and which ones are NIA cases. Subsequently, the cases might be dissolved or solved. It is taking some time as the offices are not working properly due to COVID. However, I believe all the issues will be resolved by 2021," he said.

One of the deadliest militant outfits in Assam and the entire Northeast, the NDFB was formed on October 3, 1986, under the name of Bodo Security Force with the aim of launching an armed movement to form a separate state for Bodos — the largest tribe in the state.

The outfit was rechristened NDFB in December 1994. It later broke into four different factions - headed by B Saoraigwra, Govinda Basumatary, Ranjan Daimary, and Dhirendra Boro.

The outfit disbanded in March of 2020 after signing an Accord with the Central and State governments.
