NEW DELHI: A man who impersonated Robin Hibu IPS on Facebook and Whatsapp and asked for "emergency donation" from many Northeast Indians has been arrested in Rajasthan.

Hibu later released a statement pertaining to the arrest of one Salman Khan and revealed how the fraud was operating.

According to Hibu, the accused's mobile number is registered in Manipur. "He has revealed that he along with his associates would personally appeal as Robin Hibu IPS for money by sending WhatsApp messages to Northeast Indian people or by sending friend requests on Facebook and then asking for donations," Hibu said.

Hibu has requested people who donated money to send the money receipt, mobile numbers, and donors' names for recovery of the money and for investigation by WhatsApp on the number 9810083486.

One such fraud was let go by Hibu as "he was newly married with a one-month small baby girl."

Three more youths from the Northeast had posed as Robin Hibu with his photo as the display in their WhatsApp numbers. "(They) started chatting with unsuspecting NE youth and telling gullible NE people that the WhatsApp number is my private number. Had tracked them down, taken legal action." Hibu said.

Hibu has urged people not to entertain any unverified friend requests in social media forums and refrain from making conversations on the basis of profile pics as they could be fake.
