SHILLONG: The Meghalaya government today offered a rebate of Rs 2 per litre of petrol and diesel from the tax component of the retail sale price effective from midnight of Monday.

“This is being done to maintain the price differential with neighbouring Assam and also offer relief to consumers within the state,” a government circular said.

class="rank-math-link">#Meghalaya, Govt. has decided that the rate for both petrol and diesel will be reduced by 2 rupees per litre, effective from midnight of 8th February 2021," tweeted chief minister Conrad K Sangma.

The country has been witnessing unprecedented price hike of fuel.

Prices of petroleum products are comparatively less in Meghalaya than neighbouring Assam.

The Meghalaya government’s pro-active initiative came at a time the Assam government has been assuring to reduce prices of petrol and diesel and that of liquor for more than a month by withdrawing the COVID-19 cess levied on these products. The government had imposed COVID-19 cess to the tune of Rs 5 per liter of fuel and 25 per cent on liquor prices since April and May last year respectively.

The Congress on Saturday staged statewide protests at fuel stations demanding rollback of prices of fuel. However, the Assam government continued to turn a deaf ear to the already economically devastated people of the state.
