Guwahati, October 2, 2019:

Krishak Mukti Sangram Samiti (KMSS) leader Akhil Gogoi on Wednesday lashed out at the ruling Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) on the occasion of 'Gandhi Jayanti' for allegedly favoring the rich and mighty.

Contrasting Gandhian principles and those of the ruling BJP party, Gogoi alleged that while Gandhi stood for the poorest of the poor, the BJP works only for the rich corporations. Gogoi also alleged that the ruling party has made the lives of the poorer classes downright miserable by imposing various kinds of taxes. "Corporate taxes have been relaxed, whereas commoners have been subjected to various kinds of taxes, such as those imposed by the new Motor Vehicles Act."

"The country is now being run by the Gandhi killers, that is, the followers of Nathuram Godse", he alleged, adding that the ruling administration has "murdered" the principles of the 'Father of the Nation'. Gogoi further alleged that Gandhi's killer Godse's ideology has now become the dominant political ideology in the nation.

Gogoi also added that while Gandhi never discriminated on the basis of religion, the BJP is trying to establish a 'Hindu rashtra' by enacting the Citizenship (Amendment) Bill.

The KMSS leader's comments came on the occasion of the 150th 'Gandhi Jayanti' celebrations in India. Gandhi Jayanti is an event celebrated in India to mark the birth anniversary of Mohandas Karamchand Gandhi, who was born on 2 October 1869. It is celebrated annually on 2 October, and it is one of the three national holidays of India.
